Concentrate on the Revealed will of God, not the Secret things

29 “The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but those things which are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law. (Deuteronomy 29:29)

I have known, in the past, Christians who have expended enormous energy and resources exploring the secret things of the Lord, and the Law of God was read, not as something to be obeyed, but as something to pull apart looking for esoteric clues to the mysteries of God. I, too, for a time, got caught up in this prideful, nitpicking practice.

However, it was pointed out to me that doing precedes knowing, in God's economy. We are called to "the obedience of the Faith." "If you abide in my words, you will know the Truth, and the Truth will set you free." Abiding in Jesus' words is simply doing what He commanded; and since Jesus is the Author of the whole Bible, abiding in Jesus' words is learning to hear the Holy Spirit leading us into obedient doing of the Law-Word of God. There is no secret in that; it is an open word that even the most simple of believers can understand: You shall have no other Gods besides me; you shall not make and idol or worship it; you shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain; you shall remember to keep the Sabbath Day holy; you shall honour you father and your mother; you shall not do murder; you shall not commit adultery; you shall not steal; you shall not bear false witness; you shall not covet.

It may have been Abraham Lincoln who said something along the lines of, "It's not what I don't understand about the Bible that scares me; it's what I do understand that does it!"

Doesn't matter much who said it--it's true!
