Even Satan is under the feet of God

1 Again the anger of the LORD was aroused against Israel, and He moved David against them to say, “Go, number Israel and Judah.” (II Samuel 24:1) 1 Now Satan stood up against Israel, and moved David to number Israel. (I Chronicles 21:1)

It is apparent contradictions in Scripture like this that frequently cause some to stumble. But, is this really a contradiction?

No, just as in the case of Job, God uses Satan to deliver His messages of displeasure and discipline. Does this make God evil? Of course not. It exalts God to the highest place in the universe. God is over all, and has authority over all, and God in His sublime estate, controls and uses for His own purposes, even the forces of darkness; such that we can say with the Apostle Paul: "For I know that all things work together for good, for those who love God and are the called according to His purpose."

In everything, give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus.

Matthew 16:18-19

"And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."

Revelation 20:1-6

Satan Bound 1000 Years

1 Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, having the key to the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. 2 He laid hold of the dragon, that serpent of old, who is the Devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years; 3 and he cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal on him, so that he should deceive the nations no more till the thousand years were finished. But after these things he must be released for a little while.
The Saints Reign with Christ 1000 Years

4 And I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was committed to them. Then I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for their witness to Jesus and for the word of God, who had not worshiped the beast or his image, and had not received his mark on their foreheads or on their hands. And they lived and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. 5 But the rest of the dead did not live again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection. 6 Blessed and holy is he who has part in the first resurrection. Over such the second death has no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with Him a thousand years."

The point would seem to me. Both of these passages speak of keys being given and Satan being bound. As I once blogged, the gates of hell imagery speaks not of a defensive weapon. We should stop worrying about being overcome by Satan and begin giving him something to worry about. When Jesus says the gates of hell not prevailing, it is the imagery of gates and walls being battered to dust.

Church, take hold of your weapons! Put on the full armour of God!
