A Just Government Fears God
3 The God of Israel said, The Rock of Israel spoke to me: ‘He who rules over men must be just, Ruling in the fear of God. (2 Samuel 23:3)
A just man fears God, and behaves in accord with the things that God has commanded. Those who hold offices of authority, and who, because of their office, also may exercise power, must live in the fear of God. Their rulership must be marked by justice. Justice is not arbitrary. Justice is defined by the commandments of God. Any claim to justice, that is not based on the commandments of God, is evil and wickedness.
God commands that we care for the poor, but He also commands that we not steal. When governments, in the name of justice towards the poor, steal from the rich, their actions are wicked. God has commanded that the program for addressing poverty is voluntarist, personal and must be in the spheres of family and church. Government has no mandate, from the commandments of God, to coercively address poverty in the name of justice. A welfare state has no fear of God, and ultimately shall be judged by God as wicked.
