The Family of God has the strongest relationships
5 Do not trust in a friend; do not put your confidence in a companion; guard the doors of your mouth from her who lies in your bosom. 6 For son dishonours father, daughter rises against her mother, daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; a man’s enemies are the men of his own household. (Michah 7:5-6)
Family relationships must always be subservient to our relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. He is the litmus test as to the substance of the relationship. Even a close relationship, such as mother, father, brother, sister (even husband/wife) can be estranged to the point of becoming an enemy. Any person who is an enemy of Jesus, is also an enemy of the disciple of Jesus.
Jesus said: “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple. (Luke 14:26)
Our allegiance to the Word of God, and the character and person of the Lord Jesus Christ must be of the supreme importance. The Word of God tells us how to love our enemies, but does not require us to follow their example, nor serve their sinfulness. The greatest love we can have for another is to preach the Gospel, and declare the righteousness of God that is in Christ Jesus. And if this separates family members, then it simply reveals what is in the heart of the one who is offended by the Gospel.
