The Nation Follows the Church: Government can only encourage
19 For the LORD brought Judah low because of Ahaz king of Israel, for he had encouraged moral decline in Judah and had been continually unfaithful to the LORD. (II Chronicles 28:19)
Ahaz "encouraged moral decline," but he was not the cause of moral decline. The cause of moral decline is the inclination of the human heart. "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it?" (Jeremiah 17:9). Without the faithful proclamation of the Word of God, and the immediate activity of the Holy Spirit, men and women will seek out sin and evil and wickedness, and follow the promptings of their evil hearts. "All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." "There is none who does good, no not one." An evil government administration simply removes the legal restraints, and makes it easier for evil to have its way.
There is no government answer to moral decline. The best civil government can do is set up legal boundaries to slow down the spread of wickedness, and punish the evil doers. The only way that moral decline can be reversed is through the faithful proclamation of the Gospel, and the preaching and teaching of all that Jesus has commanded. The Gospel and the Law built western civilisation (of which the world enjoys the benefits); but compromise in the preaching and teaching of the Gospel and the Law has halted human reformation, and given room for governments to encourage moral decline.
"It is the Gospel, which is the power of God unto salvation; to the Jew first and also to the Greek." Our only hope for moral ascendancy is obedience to Jesus' commission:
18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen. (Matthew 28:18-20)
