Behold the Man!

Then Pilate asked Him, saying, “Are You the King of the Jews?”
He answered him and said, “It is as you say.”(Luke 23:3)

Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now My kingdom is not from here.” Pilate therefore said to Him, “Are You a king then?” Jesus answered, “You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.” Pilate said to Him, “What is truth?” (John 18:36-38)

Jesus therefore, knowing all things that would come upon Him, went forward and said to them, “Whom are you seeking?” They answered Him, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus said to them, “I am.” And Judas, who betrayed Him, also stood with them. Now when He said to them, “I am,” they drew back and fell to the ground. Then He asked them again, “Whom are you seeking?” And they said, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus answered, “I have told you that I am. (John 18:4-8)

Then Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate said to them, “Behold the Man!” (John 19:5)

In the discourses between Jesus, Pilate and those who came to arrest Jesus, the spiritual condition of Pilate and the others was made plain; all were men of the flesh, and were spiritually blind.

By declaring Himself to be, "I am" Jesus was ascribing to Himself the Eternal name of God that was revealed to Moses (Exodus 3:14); yet after all his discourse with Jesus, Pilate declares, "Behold the man." Pilate admitted Jesus to be the "King of the Jews," but did not have the spiritual eyes to recognise Jesus for who He really was, the King of kings and the ruler of the entire Universe.

Too many of us are locked into a perception of Christ after the flesh. Yes, He is the Son of Man, and dwelt amongst us as one of us, yet at the very same time, He is the Son of God. We celebrate Christmas year by year, and meditate upon the baby in a manger; a Jesus that we can control and be emotional about. However, in His ascended glory, Jesus is now an awesome King to Whom we owe unflinching allegiance and obedience:

1 Why do the nations rage,
And the people plot a vain thing?
2 The kings of the earth set themselves,
And the rulers take counsel together,
Against the LORD and against His Anointed, saying,
3 “Let us break Their bonds in pieces
And cast away Their cords from us.”

4 He who sits in the heavens shall laugh;
The Lord shall hold them in derision.
5 Then He shall speak to them in His wrath,
And distress them in His deep displeasure:
6 “Yet I have set My King On My holy hill of Zion (the Church).”

7 “I will declare the decree:
The LORD has said to Me,
‘You are My Son,
Today I have begotten You.
8 Ask of Me, and I will give You The nations for Your inheritance, And the ends of the earth for Your possession. 9 You shall break them with a rod of iron; You shall dash them to pieces like a potter’s vessel.’”

10 Now therefore, be wise, O kings;
Be instructed, you judges of the earth.
11 Serve the LORD with fear, And rejoice with trembling. 12 Kiss the Son, lest He be angry, And you perish in the way, When His wrath is kindled but a little.
Blessed are all those who put their trust in Him. (Psalm 2)

11 Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war. 12 His eyes were like a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns. He had a name written that no one knew except Himself. 13 He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God. 14 And the armies in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, followed Him on white horses. 15 Now out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He should strike the nations. And He Himself will rule them with a rod of iron. He Himself treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. 16 And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written:

KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS. (Revelation 19:11-16)
