Thoughts at the Beginning of a New Year

"In the beginning God ..." (Genesis 1:1).

"And without faith it is impossible to please Him (God), for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who (diligently) seek Him" (Hebrews 11:6).

At the commencement of this new calendar year, it is good to re-affirm the bedrock foundation for all that is real, true and which exists. That foundation being: "God is." Every thing else emanates from that pre-supposition. In the beginning God ..., and from that given we can then explore and give meaning to every area of life and endeavour.

"For we are God's fellow workers; you are God's field, God's building. According to the grace of God which was given to me, as a wise master builder I laid a foundation, and another is building upon it. But let each man be careful how he builds upon it. For no man can lay a foundation other than the one which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if any man builds upon the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay and straw, each man's work will become evident; for the day will show it, because it is to be revealed with fire; and the fire itself will test the quality of each man's work. If any man's work which he has built upon it remains, he shall receive a reward. If any man's work is burned up, he shall suffer loss; but he himself shall be saved, yet so as through fire" (I Corinthians 3:9-15).

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God" (John 1:1)

The New Testament concurs with the Old Testament, that the foundation of all things is God. However, the New Testament gives content to the Word 'God;' identifying and equating God with the Person of the Lord Jesus Christ. The fuller self-revelation of the God who is from the beginning is identified to us as the Triunity of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Jesus Christ being "the (express) image of (this) invisible (Triune) God, the first-born of all creation. For in (and by) Him (that is the Lord Jesus Christ) all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities -- all things have been created by (through) Him, and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together" (Colossians 1:15-17).

At the commencement of this New Year I humbly request of the Lord that He keep His pre-eminence ever before me, both in my conscious mind, and my unconscious core. May I be found building upon this only foundation with gold, silver and precious stones, and may I expunge from my life's activities all things that hint of wood, hay and straw.
